WHY MASTITIS?

  • Common: 1 in 3 breastfeeding women develop mastitis

  • Preventable: Antibiotics are the go-to “cure” yet many cases are not caused by bacterial infections.

  • Understudied: No clinical data informs existing treatment guidelines

Mastitis affects the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of both mother and baby

  • Can prematurely end a mother’s breastfeeding journey

  • Over-treatment can disrupt the microbiome of both mother and baby.

  • Under-treatment can lead to serious complications and misdiagnosis such as abscess formation and sepsis.

Why Mastitis?

WHO WE ARE

VIDA Alliance seeks to close a stubborn gap in maternal and infant health: the common, preventable, and understudied conditions that affect women yet are too often overlooked. After experiencing the pain of mastitis firsthand, Adrianna Smith Reig was struck by how little data exists to guide basic questions of treatment and diagnosis. She founded VIDA Alliance, with the fiscal support of the Crimsonbridge Foundation, to fund and disseminate research affecting women during pregnancy and postartum.

Drawing on more than a decade in the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors, she has seen the unique role philanthropy can play in early-stage, high-impact projects and in building models for collaboration and scale. VIDA is working toward a world where families can make more informed healthcare decisions and providers know how to support the research and care for the foundation of life.
